How To Use The Steam Room Safely!
Allow the body to return to normal temperature after exercising.
Undress and place belongings in a locker or other secure place
Remove any metal in the form of watches and jewellery as they can become very hot in the steam room.
Remove any make up and enjoy a warm shower.
Enter the steam room and sit down.
Relax for six to twelve minutes in the steam room or less if it is not comfortable. This will raise the body temperature and the perspiration will clean the pores of the skin.
Leave the steam room and immediately take a cold shower or use the plunge pool if provided to close the pore of the skin.
Return to the steam room for a further five to ten minutes.
The hot/cold cycle can be repeated as often as comfort allows. To long an exposure may result in nausea, dizziness or fainting.
When you are ready to complete the steam session, leave the steam room and take a final shower.
Relax for fifteen to twenty minutes, or until the body temperature has returned to near normal before dressing.
During the session, drink plenty of fluids to replace those lost during perspiration but avoid alcohol.
If at anytime in the steam room any feelings of illness are experienced, leave the steam room immediately and consult with staff or seek medical advice if necessary.
The Potential Hazards Are:
Adverse reaction caused by excess heat overuse, including giddiness and fainting.
Scalding from direct contact with steam from the steam pipe.
Shock due to sudden, extreme changes in temperature induced by use of plunge pool or cold showers.
Slipping injuries cause by wet flooring.
Are You In One Of These Groups?
Children: The body temperature of young children will rise much quicker than that of older children or adults due to their underdeveloped thermo-regulatory mechanisms.
Children under 8 must not be permitted to use steam rooms at all. Older children should only use a steam room under responsible adult supervision. Adults must be aware of heat stress in children and ensure appropriate bathing times accordingly.
The Elderly: As the body becomes older it is less effective at dealing with the stresses placed upon it. The use of steam rooms should be approached with caution.
Pregnant Women: The seam room should be avoided throughout pregnancy since rising of the internal core body temperature could result in the foetus suffering ill effects.
You Should Not Use The Steam Room If You:
Are pregnant
Suffer from heart disease or circulatory problems, high or low blood pressure, or from any condition, which may affect you reaction to heat.
Are suffering from an illness causing an inability to perspire.
Are taking anticoagulants, antihistamines, vasoconstrictors, vasodilators, stimulants, hypnotics, narcotics or tranquillizers or any other medications whatsoever which makes you unsure as to the advisability of using steam rooms.
Have had a heavy meal within one and a half hours
Have consumed alcohol within one and a half hours.
Are a child under the age of 8.
Suffer from any condition whatsoever which makes you unsure as to the advisability of using steam rooms.
Be Aware That:
A stream room operates at a temperature of 40 – 50°C, Ensure this is comfortable for you.
The steam room controls should only b adjusted by an authorized person.
Jewellery, watches etc. should be removed before using steam room.
Prolonged stays in the steam room are not recommended because the continued effects of higher levels of humidity on the body can be dangerous.
How To Use The Sauna Safely!
Undress and place belongings in a locker or other secure place
Remove any metal in the form of watches and jewellery as they can become very hot in the Sauna room.
Remove any make up and enjoy a warm shower.
Take a towel to sit on.
Enter the sauna cabin and sit or lie on top of your towel, on a bench or platform at a height, which is comfortable.
Relax for eight to ten minutes in the dry heat. This will raise the body temperature and the perspiration will clean the pores of the skin.
Before becoming too uncomfortable leave the sauna and immediately take a cold shower or use the plunge pool if provided to close the pores of the skin. In Finland, some bathers dive directly into icy water.
Return to the sauna for a further five to ten minutes.
Pour one or two ladles of water onto the rocks to produce "loyly" (steam) and add more water to the rocks at intervals.
A total time in the sauna of 20 to 30 minutes should be adequate though the hot/cold cycle can be repeated as often as comfort allows. Remember too long an exposure may result in nausea, dizziness or fainting.
When you are ready to complete the sauna session, leave the sauna and take a final cold shower.
Wrap yourself in a dry towel and relax for fifteen to twenty minutes, or until the body temperature has returned to near normal then take a warm shower before dressing.
During sauna bathing, drink plenty of fluids to replace those last during perspiration – but never alcohol.
If at any time in the sauna any feelings of illness are experienced, leave the sauna immediately and consult with staff or seek medical advice is necessary.
The Potential Hazards Are:
Adverse reaction caused by excess heat or overuse, including giddiness and fainting.
Burns caused through contact with the sauna stove and light fittings.
Cross infections from unhygienic sauna bench surfaces.
Shock due to sudden, extreme changes in temperature induced by use of plunge pools or cold showers.
Allergy to chemicals used in the plunge pool disinfection process.
Fire or fumes from towels places on or above the sauna stove.
Slipping injuries caused by wet flooring.
Are You In One Of These Groups?
Children: The body temperature of young children or adults owing to their underdeveloped thermo-regulatory mechanisms.
Children should be supervised closely at all times by responsible adult and must replace lost fluids frequently. Adults must be aware of the dangers of heat stress in children and ensure an appropriate sauna experience accordingly.
The Elderly: As the body becomes older it is less effective at dealing with the stress placed upon it. Elderly people should not engage in unnecessarily intensive sauna bathing.
Pregnant Women: Pregnant women should seek medical advice before using the sauna.
You Should Not Use The Sauna If You:
Suffer from heart disease or circulatory problems, high or low blood pressure, or from any condition, which may affect you reaction to heat
Are suffering from infectious skin diseases, sores or wounds.
Are suffering from an illness causing an inability to perspire.

Have had a heavy meal within one and a half hours.
Have consumed alcohol within one and a half hours.
Have recently exercised. Time should be allowed to enable body temperature to return to normal levels.
Suffer from any condition whatsoever which makes you unsure as to the advisability of using sauna.
Be Aware That:
A sauna operates at temperature of 85-100°C. Ensure this is comfortable for you.
Jewellery, watches etc. should be removed before using the sauna.
The warmest part of the sauna is diagonally opposite the stove. The higher the benches are the warmest.
The sauna controls should only be adjusted by an authorised person.
Contact lenses and glasses should not be worn in the sauna.
Care should be taken when adding water to the stove. The sauna is intended to be a dry heat bath, it should not be so dry it is uncomfortable to the nose or throat.
Before The Treatment
Tanned skin can be treated provided the tan is not active. Therefore, avoid direct sun exposure to the area being treated for at least 5 days prior to treatment. When using the SkinPULSE SHR tanned skin can be treated immediately as long as there is no sunburn / sensitivity in the area.
The use of tanning creams must be discontinued 2 weeks before treatment.
You must avoid bleaching, plucking or waxing hair for 6 weeks prior to treatment and do not wax, epilate or pluck or remove hair by any other means than shaving as during the course of the treatment.
Do not use Depilatory creams 1 week prior to treatment.
If you have a history of cold sores, Zovirax may be used prior to treatment and continued one week after treatment.
If you have been on antibiotics, we ask that you leave 2 weeks between finishing the course and having a SkinPULSE SHR treatment.
The area to be treated must be shaved on the day of treatment, however shaving immediately prior to treatment may make the skin more sensitive so please allow sufficient time in between.
A broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen of SPF30+ should be applied whenever exposed to the sun.
After The Treatment
Occasionally there may be a sunburn-like redness that can last for 1-3 days apply a soothing lotion such as Aloe Vera or cool packs (not ice) at home if required.
Do not shave or apply deodorants/perfumes to the area for 24-48 hours to reduce any skin irritation.
There may be swelling that can last up to 48 hours - Apply cool packs at home if required.
Avoid very hot baths, sauna, hot tubs/jacuzzi, massage treatments or athletic activities for 2-3 days.
The skin may have increased sensitivity to sunlight and therefore we advise you use a 30+ sunscreen and avoid sun exposure and solarium treatments for at least 14 days after the SHR treatment. If your treatment was for pigmentation or broken capillaries these may return if you continue to expose your skin to sunlight.
Rarely there may be some itching of the skin. Avoid scratching the skin. You can take an antihistamine e.g. Piraton to alleviate this irritation, which should settle after 1-3 days.
Avoid using any skincare that contains AHA, Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid or Retinoic Acid (e.g. Retin A) for 3-5 days.
You may start to gently exfoliate the skin after 3-5 days to remove the flaky dead skin that commonly forms after SHR treatments.
It is important to maintain a good skincare routine with frequent hydration or moisturisation on a daily basis.
Vascular Treatments
There may be slight bruising, which is more common after treatments for broken capillaries and this may last for 1-7 days. If it occurs, avoid medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen, or supplements such as multivitamins, fish oils, glucosamine and Vitamin B or Vitamin E, which are blood-thinning agents and may exacerbate bruising, for 24 hours (if these medications or supplements have been advised by your GP please check with your GP before stopping).
Treated broken capillaries may appear darker in the first 1-3 days after treatment and will gradually fade away over the next 4 weeks as the body reabsorbs them
Pigmentation Treatments
Very rarely, blistering may occur. If this occurs apply cool packs and cooling gels (Aloe Vera).
Pigmented spots and freckles may darken after the treatment and within 1-2 days a fine flaky covering may develop over them, which range in colour from brown to almost back similar looking to blisters. This will shed over the next 3- 5 days to reveal a fresh skin with more neutral skin colouring. You MUST NOT pick, scratch or use any exfoliant (gentle exfoliation may be allowed after 3-5 days) as this may damage the new skin and introduce bacteria leading to skin infections.
Lightening or darkening of the skin may occur in treated areas. This can result in 'striping' on the skin. Lighter stripes are more common in people with a slightly darker natural skin tone (this effect is resolved by further treatments and is often a necessary result from the first 1-3 treatments). Darker stripes are more common in people who fail to use 30+ sunblock and/or expose the treated skin to sunlight within the first week after the SHR treatment.
